A classical saxophone quartet from Victoria is bringing its tour to New Westminster.

Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet is onstage at Holy Trinity Cathedral on Friday, Feb. 21. The concert is set for 7 p.m., with a reception to follow.

The concert is called Mountain Roads, after American composer David Maslanka’s 1997 piece of the same name. Blending newer and older musical styles, Mountain Roads embarks on a sonic journey that is inspired by rugged mountain ranges and a spiritual form of beauty.

Also on the program will be works by Astor Piazzolla, J.S. Bach, Antonin Dvorak and others.

Formed in 2017 at the University of Victoria, the Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet is an award-winning ensemble that promotes conversation through music. “Sobremesa” translates to “over the table” in Spanish and refers to the time spent in conversation after a meal.

“From this, the group’s goal is to create meaningful musical experiences with which audiences can easily engage,” says a press release.

In both 2018 and 2019, Sobremesa won first place for chamber music in the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and went on to receive first and second place at the Performing Arts B.C. Festival in those years.

The four members are accomplished young musicians in their own right: Victoria-born Karsten Brewka on baritone, St. Catharines, Ont. native Todd Morgan on tenor, Kamloops’ Matt Fichter on alto and Rocky Point, P.E.I.’s Connor Stairs on soprano.

Holy Trinity Cathedral is at 514 Carnarvon St. Tickets for the concert are $20 general admission, available through www.eventbrite.ca (search for Sobremesa Saxophone Quartet), through the parish office or at the door. Student tickets are available for $10, at the door only.
