Everyone talks about the weather - except Les Linfoot. He paints about it.
Linfoot's new exhibition, Everyone Talks About the Weather... is opening at the Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College on Aug. 8. "I don't really make landscape paintings. I make paintings about landscape," Linfoot says in a press release. "I want people to view my work and rethink the idea of landscape, of locating oneself in the geography of time and place." The exhibition will run from Aug. 8 to Sept. 6, with an artist's talk on Sept. 6 at 10 a.m., and a closing reception that evening from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with live music by Little Mountain Trio.
The gallery is on the fourth floor north at Douglas College, 700 Royal Ave. It's open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibition will be open special hours for the New Westminster Cultural Crawl -11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11. Cultural Crawl attendees will also be able to find art to explore at New Westminster Public Library.
The library is taking part in the crawl with two separate shows.
On the second floor, in the reference department, visitors can check out the work of Ceci Lam. The artist describes her show as a "colour experience," with canvases in oil and acrylic, using an interpretive realistic style for landscapes, florals, portraits and animals.
On the main floor, you'll be able to see a display of photographs entered in the library's My New West photo contest.
Among the photos will be the winning entry by Tatum Wulff, Living the Good Life on the Quay, along with the four runners-up: Blue Wall, by
Brooke MacDonald; Twilight Mist, by Janet Kvammen; Rollin' through Royal City, by Sean Gorsuch; and Old Car Parade on 12th Street, by Brenda Fairfax. Several honourable mentions will also be included in the show.
During the New Westminster Cultural Crawl weekend, the library will be open Saturday, Aug. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 11 from 1 to 5 p.m. The library is at 716 Sixth Ave. (The elevator will not be available starting Aug. 10, because of repairs.). That's pretty much what art is all about - and it's the focus of a poetry workshop at the New Westminster Public Library on Monday, Aug. 12.
A library press release notes that the workshop, set for 7:30 p.m., will look into various types of passions and their effects and influence on our inspiration.
"The use of poetic works will help explore how emotions influence writing. The balance of the workshop will focus on methods of developing and painting passion and acquiring new inspiration," the release notes.
The workshop is led by Deborah Kelly, who has been writing poetry for more than 40 years. She currently hosts and features with Poetic Justice in New Westminster, has been the recipient of the Poet of Merit award from the International Society of Poets and has published her poetry in numerous Canadian and international publications.

. The Hyack Festival is continuing to make the Royal City known around the Pacific Northwest.
The festival's 2013 parade float won the Judges' Appreciation Award at the Capital Lakefair Grand Parade in Olympia, Washington on July 20, and had another win at the Alaska Airlines Seafair Torchlight Parade in Seattle on July 27.
That makes six awards for the float this year.

Ltd., for their unique design and construction, and our own Miss New Westminster and Ambassadors for their talents in representing New Westminster in such an exciting manner," Hyack president Gavin Palmer said in a press release.
A Hyack press release notes Ambassador Carli Henssler and Miss New Westminster Amanda Zacharuk entertained the crowd in Olympia. In Seattle, Amanda was joined by Ambassador Cynthia Tan.
The float was in the White Rock Spirit of the Sea Torchlight Parade on Aug. 3. It will also be featured in the Leavenworth Autumn Leaf Festival parade in September and the Issaquah Salmon Days in October.
