Music lovers will want to keep their eyes on Douglas College for some innovative – and affordable – performances this spring.
The college has a host of music offerings coming up in March and April.
On Thursdays, audiences can enjoy the free concerts that are part of the Arts at One series, happening at 1 p.m. in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre.
The concert series is taking a brief winter break but resumes on March 14, with pianist Barrie Barrington offering up Nothing More Than Feelings: German Sturm und Drang and Empfindsamkeit.
March 21 will see the Mathieu-Chua Duo present In Celebration of Women, featuring the work of innovative women composers of various times and cultures, while March 28 and April 4 feature student showcase concerts.
On Saturday, March 16, choral music lovers can catch the Douglas College choirs in concert, under the direction of Eric Hannan. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. at Queens Avenue United Church. Tickets are $15 regular, $10 for seniors and free for students, available at the door.
Wednesday, March 27 will see the Music Technology Portfolio Show, featuring work by the graduates of the music technology diploma program, in the concourse at the New West campus. It’s free and runs from noon to 4 p.m.
The music department also has a few evening events coming up: an awards benefit concert, featuring the college choirs and concert band, at 7:30 p.m. on March 29; a Zappostrophe! concert on Monday, April 1 featuring the music of Frank Zappa; and An Evening of Jazz, featuring the Douglas College Dues Band and special guests Impressions Big Band, on Tuesday, April 2. Those three evening concerts are happening in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre at 7:30 p.m., with $10 general admission tickets ($5 for seniors; students free).
Two free concerts featuring student talents are also happening in the Laura C. Muir Performing Arts Theatre. On Thursday, April 4, audiences can enjoy Current Sound Waves VIII, featuring outstanding projects by music technology diploma grads and performances by the Douglas College Fusion Bands. On Saturday, April 6, it’s the student composition concert, featuring an evening of new compositions written and performed by music students. Both those concerts are at 7:30 p.m.
