Young conductor makes debut with Handel’s Messiah

Tenor Josh Lovell will be the soloist for the Victoria Symphony’s performances of Handel’s Messiah Friday and Sunday.

At age 18, Lovell was a soloist for the 2009 Symphony Splash, performing for a crowd of 40,000-plus. He went on to take a bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Victoria.

For the weekend concerts he will be joined by soprano Eve-Lyn de la Hay, mezzo-soprano Marion Newman and baritone Geoffrey Sirret. The conductor will be Nathan Brock, making his debut with the Victoria Symphony.

The concerts feature the 120-voice Victoria Choral Society, which has sung the Messiah with the Victoria Symphony since 1934 (when it was called the Victoria Choral Union).

The concerts take place Friday, 8 p.m. and Sunday, 2:30 p.m. at the University of Victoria Centre Farquhar Auditorium.
