Lorna Crozier is "one of Canada's most senior and prolific writers," says prize-jury member Alma Lee.

Victoria poet Lorna Crozier is the co-winner of this year’s Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence.

Crozier shares the honour with Vancouver writer Sarah Ellis.

The two will receive their joint award May 4 at the Lieutenant Governor’s B.C. Book Prizes Gala at Government House.

The award was established in 2003 to recognize B.C. writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the province.

As part of the award, Crozier and Ellis will share a $5,000 prize.

This is the first time the award has been shared.

The jury was composed of writer Brian Brett (who won the award last year), Alma Lee, founder of the Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival, and Lynn Copeland, former dean of library services at Simon Fraser University.

In a written statement, Lee described Crozier as “one of Canada’s most senior and prolific writers … a writer who has made a major contribution to literary excellence in this province.”

Crozier has published 17 books of poetry, most recently The Book of Marvels: A Compendium of Everyday Things. She is the recipient of most of Canada’s top literary prizes, including the Governor General’s Award. In 2011, Crozier was named an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Ellis is an internationally known writer of books for young readers, a lecturer on children’s literature and one of Canada’s leading children’s librarians.
