Tate, Dhula join for gig

A pair of legendary Victoria performers are banding together for a rare gig on their home turf for a fundraising concert Saturday at Hush nightclub.

Keyboard maestro Dan Tate and multi-instrumentalist/DJ Tyger Dhula are taking breaks from their solo schedules to jam on a set of live instrumentals rooted in the common ground between funk, jazz-fusion and house music.

Tate and Dhula, co-founders of the Velvet collective and are bandmates in Cobblestone Jazz and Modern Deep Left Quartet, often perform overseas but rarely in their hometown.

Ticket information is not available. For more information, go to hushnightclub.ca. Hush is located at 1325 Government St.

Shabazz Palaces back after snafu

Seattle hip-hop collective Shabazz Palaces is making good on a cancellation from nearly a year ago with a highly anticipated set tonight at Upstairs Cabaret.

The band behind one of 2011’s most acclaimed albums, Black Up, is making its long-awaited debut after a touring snafu scuttled the duo’s Victoria date originally scheduled last June.

Tickets are $15 at Lyle’s Place, Ditch Records and ticketweb.ca or $17 at the door. Opens acts are Malitia MaliMob and Monolithium.
