Re: "Cedar Hill golf course restaurant closing," Jan. 13.
Saanich's decision to close the restaurant at Cedar Hill golf course is a surprise to most patrons. We, like many nongolfers, have been regulars at the restaurant for many years.
After a visit to Saanich municipal hall, we are puzzled.
The decision to close the restaurant was made at an in camera meeting - no minutes are available to the public - after a golf course consultant submitted a report.
No consultation took place with the 25 staff members or the patrons.
The restaurant never had a sign at the entrance to the course. Many walkers, hikers and trail users were not aware that the course had a full-service restaurant open to the public, and what the hours were. This obvious first line of advertising was missed by the consultant.
Saanich taxpayers also subsidize the golfers at the Cedar Hill course, but only about 150 pass holders are Saanich residents. The golf course is one of the least expensive in Greater Victoria.
Cedar Hill - which besides the golf course includes the restaurant, banquet facilities and a busy 3.6-kilometre chip trail - has an advisory committee of five people, four of whom are golfers.
No members are from the other regular users of the restaurant and/or trails - running and hiking groups, walkers, dog walkers and seniors groups.
Why doesn't council ask the community for cost-saving ideas before closing this popular facility? Council gave the consultant Saanich taxpayers' money, and we'll do it for free.
