Photo Gallery on the Times Colonist
Showing Times Colonist photographers' top photos of 2012
The rest of the year, Times Colonist photographers Adrian Lam, Lyle Stafford, Darren Stone and Bruce Stotesbury cover what goes on in Greater Victoria — the good, the bad and occasionally the ugly. Today, however, they pick their favourite images from 2012, and tell you what it is about these pictures that makes them special.

This photo is one of my favourite news photos of 2012. The photo tells the story of a pedestrian accident after the victim has been removed from the scene.

One of my favourite feature photos of the year is from the recent classic-rock triple-bill of Night Ranger, Loverboy and Journey at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

I was assigned to cover the opening night of the Rifflandia Music Festival at Royal Athletic Park. The Flaming Lips were one of the opening acts and I wanted to capture lead singer Wayne Coyne as he floats over the crowd in a human beach ball.

An ongoing story is the population of herons in Beacon Hill Park. A few years ago, a bald eagle decimated the population, but the birds have been starting to return to the nesting area high above the park.

Modern sports photography is captured at over 10 frames per second Ñ so fast, the human eye canÕt see it. The best sports action photos are a complete surprise to the photographer.

There are days when illustrating an assignment can be a real challenge for a photographer Ñ as with a writer staring at a blank piece of paper. Getting one photograph to tell a story can sometimes cause a mini panic attack.

Trying to take an interesting photo of a guy who has his picture taken on an hourly basis: That was the task at hand when I was asked to photograph Justin Trudeau, MP for Papineau, Que., and parliamentary critic for youth, citizenship and immigration.

I wanted to give Jessica Whitbread, a Toronto native who is campaigning for decriminalization of consensual sex without disclosing being HIV-positive, a feeling of isolation.

On the way back from covering a fatal car accident, reporter Katie DeRosa and I decided to stop by the hospital and see if we could see or meet some of the families of those involved.

It was shot at the end of the year, but all good things happen at the end. I came in to work early, as always, and was barraged with a stream of people coming into the photographersÕ room to tell me I had to go shoot an owl on the roof of our building.

I enjoy every opportunity to photograph musician Natasha Enquist, seen at right posing with Kasia Waissmann at the Superior Caf. I really enjoyed myself, as they gave me complete creative control over the photo shoot.
