The thick and the thin of today’s most popular legwear

Richard Watts / Times Colonist
December 18, 2012

Heart and Sole tights and socks.

Tights in three places

Sheer nylons, or pantyhose, while dropping in popularity in recent years, will always have a place, at the high-level office or with evening wear.

Tights are usually about double the thickness of a standard pair of nylons. They can be made of Lycra or polyester but can also include natural fabrics such as cotton and wool. Made heavier fabrics than standard nylons, tights can provide more lift, or pull, making them more comfortable.

Leggings, without going to full-on socks or leg-warmers, these are the thickest of all. Usually constructed without feet, these are rarely less than the full fabric weight of a standard T-shirt. These are often worn with a tunic-style top. Some leggings are now made with material as thick as something you might find in a typical dress pant, making some leggings suitable even for an office environment.
