MUNICH - Felix Neureuther of Germany rode the support of the home crowd to win a World Cup parallel slalom event under floodlights in Munich's Olympic park on Tuesday.

Neureuther edged Marcel Hirscher of Austria, winning both heats of the final race. Third place went to Alexis Pinturault of France, who beat Andre Myhrer of Sweden.

Hirscher, who leads the World Cup slalom standings, beat Neureuther handily in a classic slalom last month in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, but the German prevailed in the head-to-head contest before an enthusiastic crowd of 17,000 at the bottom of the course on the site of the Summer Olympics in 1972.

"Everything fit in perfectly today," Neureuther said after his third career victory. "The best racers were all here. The tension may be even greater than in a normal race."

Veronika Velez Zuzulova of Slovakia upset overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia to win the women's race, her second straight World Cup victory. She also won a slalom in Semmering, Austria, last week. Michaela Kirchgasser of Austria was third, beating Tanja Poutiainen of Finland.

The winners earned 100 points each in the slalom standings.

Maze still leads the overall standings by a massive margin and is also five points ahead of Velez Zuzulova in the slalom standings.

None of the three Americans — Ted Ligety, Mikaela Shiffrin and Julia Mancuso — made it past the quarterfinals.

Ligety was eliminated by Neureuther in the opening round, while Shiffrin went out against Velez Zuzulova in the quarterfinals. Mancuso lost to Poutiainen, also in the quarterfinals.

Overall World Cup leader Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway was beaten in the first round by Ivica Kostelic, who then lost to Pinturault.

Under the city event format, 16 men and 16 women started the race.
