Vikes sweep Shootout titles at Cordova Bay

The pressure was off and Bruce Tomie responded by winning his second individual men’s title at the Vikes Shootout at Cordova Bay Golf Course on Tuesday.

In his final year as a Vike, Tomie added the 2017 crown to his initial 2013 championship with rounds of 70-71 on Monday and Tuesday for a 1-under 141 total, five shots clear of runner-up Jack Werhun (72-74) of the University of Manitoba.

But Tomie’s score couldn’t help the University of Victoria men’s team as he was not a member of the team this week, playing as an individual only. But the Vikes didn’t need any extra help, winning the event with a 594 total. The Vikes women were also victorious for a clean sweep with a 640 total. Both teams also qualify for the 2018 Canadian University championships.

This day belonged to Tomie, who had to struggle with rain on the front nine to go with the wind.

“I’m pretty happy with it,” said Tomie, 22, who made it a sibling sweep with his sister, Brynn Tomie, a former Vike, back in 2013. “I’ve been struggling for the last couple of events now, so playing as an individual is a little more relaxing. I got out there and tried to do my thing and it kind of came together this week.”

First-round leader Lawren Rowe of UVic followed up his 2-under 69 with an 8-over 79 on a wind-swept day that played havoc with club selection. Rowe finished fifth, one shot behind teammate Jacob Hayes (72-75). Fellow Vike Mike Griffin, who began the day tied in second with Tomie at 1-under 70, struggled to an 82 to finish T13th.

Bethany Bullers of Corban University in Salem, Oregon, (77-76) won the individual women’s event, ahead of UBC’s Rebecca Kuik (78-77) and UVic’s Rhiannon Jones (81-76).
