Victoria Royals’ coach Dave Lowry to be on world junior team staff

The 2015 world juniors are to be hosted by Montreal and Toronto from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.

TSN reported Benoit Groulx of the Gatineau Olympiques from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will be head coach for Canada and that Lowry, from the Western Hockey League’s Royals, and Scott Walker from the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League will be the assistant coaches.

The announcement from Hockey Canada is expected today.

Lowry, named 2013-14 WHL coach of the year after leading the Royals to the second round of the playoffs, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Canada opens group play at the world junior tournament Dec. 26 against Slovakia. Other Canadian group games will be against Germany, Finland and the United States. The knockout stage starts Jan. 2 through to the gold medal final Jan. 5.

Canada is looking for its first world junior title since 2009.
