Joe Hicketts’ rebound season continued Monday when the Victoria Royals defenceman was named Western Hockey League player of the week. The mobile blue-liner was cited for his goal and six assists in four games as the Royals concluded a six-game road trek with a 4-2 record.

Hicketts is tied for the league lead in scoring for defencemen with four goals and 15 points in 11 games. Madison Bowey of the Kelowna Rockets also has four goals and 15 points but in just nine games.

Hicketts becomes only the second player since the team moved to Victoria from Chilliwack in 2011 to be named WHL player of the week following forward Alex Gogolev in 2012-13.

Hicketts, who missed much of the 2013-14 season with injury, was overlooked in the 2014 NHL draft but was signed as a free agent this fall by the Detroit Red Wings. Hicketts, a native of Kamloops, has also been selected to play for the WHL team against the Russian juniors in the annual Subway Super Series next month.

Hicketts and the Royals are back in action this weekend when they meet the Vancouver Giants on Friday and Saturday at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
