Victoria’s top young baseball players will get a chance to measure themselves against the U.S. collegiate NCAA players from the Victoria HarbourCats during a West Coast League pre-season game set for June 5 at Royal Athletic Park.

A combined team of players from the Victoria Mariners and Victoria Eagles of the B.C. Premier League will play the HarbourCats.

“This is a win-win for everyone involved, and we’re glad to partner further with local youth baseball,” HarbourCats GM Jim Swanson said in a statement.

“This event will give our coaches a chance to evaluate our players in a game situation, it will give our staff and the City of Victoria a chance to prepare for all facility operations, and we’re excited it will showcase the best young baseball players in Victoria against elite college athletes.”

Prior to the 2013 WCL opener for the HarbourCats, the organization hosted a game between the Mariners and Eagles at Royal Athletic. The game drew a large crowd and funds raised went to assist local player Zack Downey in his ongoing battle with cancer.

“Victoria is fortunate to have two PBL programs, giving youth baseball players an excellent opportunity to play at the highest levels, and this game will be a memorable one for our older players, and a real test for them against the HarbourCats,” said Adrian Somers, president of the Mariners.

Last season, the HarbourCats raised more than $25,000 for various Victoria youth baseball associations.

The HarbourCats open the 2014 WCL season on the road in Kelowna against the Falcons on June 6. The home opener is June 10 against the Cowlitz Black Bears.
