The University of Victoria Vikes women’s soccer team saw their season come to a sudden end Thursday morning in Saskatoon.

Jordan Smith’s goal in added injury time gave the University of Calgary Dinos a 2-1 win over the Vikes at the Canada West women’s Select Six tournament.

The Vikes are eliminated from further play, while the Dinos move on to face the UBC Thunderbirds in the conference semifinals on Saturday.

Maddison Fritze opened the scoring for the Dinos in the 27th minute on a cool day at the University of Saskatchewan. Elise Butler tied it for the Vikes in the 54th minute and Victoria pressed for a majority of the second half and actually had 12 corner kicks on the day, six in each half.

It slipped away, however, as Smith ended it in added time.

The two teams had drawn 0-0 in regular-season play.

Meanwhile, the Vikes men’s team will begin Canada West Final Four play today in a semifinal at 5 p.m. against Trinity Western at UBC. The winner automatically advances to the CIS national championship in Toronto next week.

The UBC T-Birds will meet Fraser Valley in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

Two teams will represent the conference at nationals.
