An old friendship will again bring Major League Soccer through Centennial Stadium on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m., when the Vancouver Whitecaps play the University of Victoria Vikes.
This has become an annual fixture, with the pro Whitecaps defeating the Vikes 1-0 last year on a goal in the 90th minute before nearly 3,000 fans. The Whitecaps won the 2013 game 3-0 before 2,600 fans.
UVic head coach Bruce Wilson and Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi played 13 years together on a tightly-knit backline for the Canadian national team, including in the 1984 L.A. Summer Olympics and 1986 World Cup.
Wilson said the Whitecaps, who will be in the midst of training camp, are sending their first team.
The Vikes, Canada West semifinalists and ranked as high as No. 4 nationally this past season, will arrive home only the night before from a three-game tour of Florida. But the team wouldn’t dream of not pulling this off.
“We get to play an MLS team at home. We want this fixture for the fans of Victoria,” said Wilson.
