UEFA orders Fenerbahce to play Europa League match in empty stadium over fan violence

NYON, Switzerland - UEFA has ordered Turkish club Fenerbahce to play a Europa League match in an empty stadium after fans threw objects during a game against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

The Istanbul club will play behind closed doors against Bate Borisov on Feb. 21 in a last-32, second-leg match.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel also fined Fenerbahce €40,000 ($53,500).

UEFA revoked a deferred sanction after similar incidents during a Champions League playoff round match against Spartak Moscow on Aug. 29. Fenerbahce was eliminated then, and joined the second-tier Europa League group stage.

Fenerbahce can appeal the sanctions.
