Rack of clothing set on fire at Bay store in Nanaimo

Nanaimo RCMP believe a firebug may be responsible for setting a rack of clothes on fire inside the Bay in the Woodgrove Centre on Sunday.

Someone set fire to a rack of clothes in the women’s section around 4 p.m. on Sunday, said Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong.

The fire spread to other racks of clothes which activated the store’s sprinkler system. No one was injured but the the mall was evacuated.

There was significant smoke and water damage to parts of the store.

Video surveillance was reviewed and police have identified a person of interest, Armstrong said.

Investigators believe the same person might be responsible for a similar incident on Jan. 2.
