This has been a golden year for Emma Entzminger, and the standout softball player from Lambrick Park Secondary is about to add to her trophy case.

Entzminger has been named the winner of the 2017 Softball B.C. Senior Athlete of the Year Award.

As she heads into her senior year on a full-ride NCAA scholarship at San Jose State University, Entzminger is coming off a stellar spring and summer on the softball diamond. She started off by helping her San Jose State Spartans win the conference championship and advance to the NCAA tournament, where they collected the first NCAA tournament win in school history.

Then Entzminger turned her attention to the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg where she helped Team B.C. win the gold medal.

Entzminger will receive her athlete of the year award at the Softball B.C. annual awards banquet Oct. 21 at the Marriott Vancouver Airport Hotel in Richmond.

Royal honour for Victoria product

You couldn’t hear it from Vancouver Island, but at midnight PDT on Wednesday, a cannon fired into the sky from St. Andrews Royal and Ancient Golf Club in Scotland.

The blast marked a historic day at the famed golf club that has played host to many Open championships. For the first time in the club’s almost 300-year history, a Canadian has been named club captain for 2017-18. And at 8 a.m. sharp local time, former Victoria resident Bruce Mitchell will have taken the honorary captain’s shot on the Old Course’s first tee box and have been presented the Captain’s Gold Medal as a permanent symbol of his tenure.

Mitchell was nominated by past captains of the club.

The duties of the captain include representing the R&A and aiding its effort in developing golf around the world as well as attending all R&A championships while embracing the role of ambassador for the club.

The 71-year-old is the founder, owner and president of Permian Industries and his business resumé includes serving on the board of directors of the Bank of Montreal and other public, private and not-for-profit organizations.

Reaume on track for truck success

Josh Reaume continues to speed past the competition in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The Victoria driver heads into Friday’s race at New Hampshire Speedway near Loudon with plenty of momentum thanks to a 19th-place finish last weekend in the Chicagoland 225 in Joliet, Illinois. Reaume started Race 16 of 23 in the 25th spot and drove his Colonial Countertops Chevrolet Silverado to a top-20 finish.

Time for kids to ‘Rock the House’

The club is hosting an Optimist ‘I Rock the House’ curling camp that will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children will learn from experienced junior curlers and certified curling coaches.

Cost of the camp is $20 and includes lunch. To register, go to curlbc.ca/i-rock-the-house or call 604-333-3620.
