A new high school gymnastics program in Victoria is paying dividends for girls and boys.

The Victoria High School Gymnastics Team started a boys’ division last year and at last weekend’s provincial championships in Burnaby, three local athletes brought home some serious hardware.

Ben Pierce of Ecole Victor Brodeur was crowned the Level 3 all-around champion after placing first on floor, pommel horse, vault and parallel bars and second on high bar.

Teammate Ian Burnett of Claremont earned the all-around silver with first-place finishes on rings and vault, while Jack Dompierre of Claremont earned bronze medals on pommel horse and vault.

On the girls’ side, in Level 4, Rachel Peressini of Claremont finished fifth all-around thanks to a gold medal on the floor and bronze on the beam. Teammate Emilie Gosselin of Ecole Victor Brodeur was 10th in all-around after earning a silver medal on the floor.

Pitch Hit and Run to all-star game

The popular Major League Baseball-sponsored Pitch Hit and Run competition is coming to Victoria this spring.

Gordon Head Baseball will be holding the initial event on April 7 at noon at Wilf Sadler Field (Lambrick Park).

It’s a free event for boys and girls aged seven to 14 where players compete in three events — pitching, hitting and running — and have the opportunity to advance through four levels that end at the MLB all-star week.

Victoria City rowers making waves

Seven junior rowers from Victoria City Rowing Club continue to be on the Canadian national team’s radar.

Tai Kilpatrick, Spencer Thomas, Meridith Bonneau, Aislinn Hill, Sierra Inglis, Paige Letham and Danae McCulloch have been invited to Rowing Canada Aviron’s Stage 2 assessment camp for the junior national team.

The Stage 2 camp takes place April 14-15 at Burnaby Lake, where 38 rowers from around Western Canada will be assessed.

Following the Burnaby Lake camp, athletes will be selected to move on to Stage 3 of the selection process, which will take place June 26-30 in Ontario.
