Czech Republic downs Finland 3-1 for first world junior event win

December 28, 2012

UFA, Russia - Tomas Hyka and Marek Hrbas scored first-period goals to lead the Czech Republic to a 3-1 win over Finland at the world junior hockey tournament Friday.

Dmitrij Jaskin added an empty-net goal for the Czech Republic (1-1).

Teuvo Teravainen had the lone goal for Finland (1-1).

The win by the Czech Republic tightened up the standings in Pool A.

Sweden leads the way with five points, with Switzerland second with four. Finland and the Czech Republic are tied for third with three points while Latvia is last with none.

Hyka opened the scoring at 14:16 with a shot over the glove of Finnish goalie Joonas Korpisalo. Less than three minutes later, Hrbas made it 2-0 after deflecting Petr Sidlik’s point show on the power play.

Teravainen's goal at 2:29 of the second pulled the Finns to within 2-1 but that's as close as they would get as Jaskin cemented the victory with his empty-net goal in the third.
