The Victoria Highlanders and the Washington Crossfire from Redmond played out a scoreless draw in United Soccer League Premier Development League action at Centennial Stadium on Saturday night.

The Victoria Highlanders and the Washington Crossfire from Redmond played out a scoreless draw in United Soccer League Premier Development League action at Centennial Stadium on Saturday night.

The teams meet again this afternoon at 2, also at Centennial Stadium.

After Saturday’s game, Victoria is 2-4-4 in the Northwest Division and the Crossfire 3-3-4.

“I was disappointed in the outcome because we outchanced them,” Victoria coach Dave Dew said.

“I thought it was the best creativity we have shown all year, but their left-back [Junior Sanchez] cleared three balls off the line for them.”

Victoria’s best chances came from Cam Hundal, Mike North and Chris Rushworth.

The Highlanders entered the game on a two-game losing streak, including a 2-0 defeat last weekend to the Crossfire in Redmond.

The Crossfire feature U.S. collegiate NCAA players, among the most impressive of whom is central defender Nathan Aune from the NCAA Div. 1 Seattle University Redhawks.

“The Crossfire are very well organized,” Dew said.

Brandon Watson and Nolan Wirth, the latter a Comox Valley product with the Oregon State Beavers of the NCAA Pac-12, are sharing the Highlanders goalkeeping duties this weekend.

It was Watson who earned the clean sheet on Saturday night.
