Victoria native and Mount Douglas Secondary graduate Cait Haggarty is returning home to become the new head coach of the Camosun College Chargers women’s basketball team.

Haggarty, who played for the UBC Thunderbirds from 2003 to 2008 while pursuing a degree in kinesiology and health sciences, helped the Thunderbirds win three national U Sports titles in 2004, 2006 and 2008. She was a three-time academic all-Canadian and Thunderbirds co-captain in her final two seasons of varsity competition. Haggarty also served as an assistant coach of the T-Birds in 2009-10 and 2012-13.

Haggarty earned a master of education degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership from the University of Washington while working as a graduate assistant with the Seattle University women’s basketball team.

Haggarty recently completed the Firefighter Technologies Certificate Program through the Justice Institute of B.C. Prior to that, she lived in Vancouver working as a personal trainer.

“This [is an] amazing opportunity to coach at Camosun and to be closer to family and friends,” she said. “My top priority is becoming familiar with the program and players, and getting things in place for the upcoming season.”

Haggarty has selected her assistant coaches — former Chargers Niki Sunder and Courtenay Lowther (nee Parks).

The Chargers have not had a women’s basketball podium finish at the Pacwest conference championship tournament the past seven seasons.
