The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association women’s volleyball championship will be going cost-to-coast within the next 14 months, out east this spring and in Victoria a year later.

Camosun College was awarded the 2017 CCAA national championship on Tuesday as the school’s bid was accepted and approved at winter meetings in Ottawa. The tournament will take place at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence gym, March 8-11, 2017.

The 2016 championship will be hosted by Holland College in Charlottetown, P.E.I., March 9-12.

“We are looking forward to this opportunity of showcasing women’s volleyball at the national collegiate level to the rest of the country, making this championship a memorable experience for all involved,” Graham Matthews, athletics co-ordinator at Camosun, said in a statement.

Since moving to PISE six years ago, the Chargers Athletics program has played host to two Pacwest provincials, including last year’s men’s and women’s volleyball championships, which packed the PISE gym.

“The success and positive feedback received from this past event has provided the college with the confidence of moving to the next step in taking on the responsibilities of hosting the CCAA women’s volleyball national championship,” added Matthews.

The Chargers’ women’s team, led by coach Chris Dahl, claimed bronze at the 2015 national championship at CEGEP Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil, Que., the program’s first-ever national medal in women’s volleyball.

Meanwhile, the Chargers’ men’s team won gold in Charlottetown last year and is perched to make another run this year with Douglas College, in New Westminster, the site from March 9-12.

“Camosun’s women’s volleyball program has come on strong in the last couple of years nationally with winning a bronze medal last year,” Fred Batley, CCAA women’s volleyball convenor, said in a statement. “With a new facility, a fan base and many volunteers I know that Graham and his organizing committee will do a fantastic job.” —Times Colonist
