Kevin Addison, charged in connection with the April 30 shooting at the Western Forest Products sawmill near downtown Nanaimo, made a second appearance in court Tuesday morning

Addison, a 47-year-old former mill employee, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder with a firearm. He appeared in Nanaimo Provincial Court via video conference from Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, where he is being held.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and sitting in a room with white brick walls, Addison was responsive, saying “OK, OK,” as he was told his case would be adjourned for another month.

Addison’s lawyer John Gustafson told reporters outside the courthouse that things can’t progress until police disclose the results of their investigation.

“I’m still waiting on a lot of the information that’s going to be coming in from the Crown and from the police,” he said. “Right now, we know very little about what happened and what happened before. There’s been a general report … but we don’t have the specifics yet.”

Gustafson added a mental health evaluation will be considered, but hasn’t been discussed yet.

He said he has met with Addison a few times before speaking with him again on Tuesday.

When asked about his client’s state, Gustafson said that he’s doing “as well as a person can in his current circumstances.”

Addison is scheduled to appear again in Nanaimo Provincial Court via video on June 10.
