With a roster as thin as former supermodel Twiggy, it was inevitable that fatigue would eventually become a factor for the Victoria Grizzlies.
Coach Rob Doyle had just 13 skaters to draw from again Saturday and after opening up a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, folded faster than a tent in a rainstorm in a 10-3 B.C. Hockey League rout at Weyerhaeuser Arena.
Brothers Artsiom and Yan Kalashnikov, Josh Mitchell, Alex Grupe and Tryg Strand all scored second-period goals as the Bulldogs bounced back from a 3-2 first-period deficit.
To add injury to insult, newcomer Mitchell Smith — who scored twice in Saturday’s 6-5 Grizzlies’ win in Coquitlam on Friday — blew out his knee in the troublesome second period and Nolan DeJong was hurt in the third as Doyle’s bench was cut to 11.
Chase Kaiser got Victoria started with his first of two goals on the night, scoring on a breakaway just 3:01 in. Michael Sandor and Kaiser then tallied 50 seconds apart by the 7:00 mark of the first period and it appeared that the club was on its way to recording a second straight-win. It would have been the first time they managed two straight victories since
Dec. 14.
The Bulldogs had other ideas in mind, though, and came right back with goals 14 seconds apart from Evan Tironese and Ryan Lough just over the midway mark of the first. Then came the onslaught in the second, in which the Bulldogs out-shot the Grizz 22-4.
Taylor Pears made his third-straight appearance in net for Victoria and faced 60 shots. In the past three games the goalie has been peppered with 177 shots, averaging 59 saves a game.
The brothers Kalashnikov added a goal each in the third as they finished with nine total points on the night. Tironese also tallied his second.
The Spurs bent, but didn't break.
