Welcome to South Vancouver Island’s February basketball frenzy. For the next four days, basketball fans will be in their glory with several playoff options, including city, Islands and Canada West action.

The senior girls’ triple-A Island championship starts today at Mount Douglas, as do the Island championships for single-A (at St. Andrew’s) and double-A (at St. Michaels University School) for senior boys. The triple-A senior boys’ city championship continues today at Oak Bay, while the University of Victoria Vikes men’s team are in playoff action (best-of-three) starting Friday at McKinnon Gym against the Calgary Dinos.

The Claremont Spartans are the No. 1-ranked team from the South in the senior girls’ championship, while Alberni is No. 1 from the North.

“We have had to do some rebuilding this year, but we’ve had a great team effort and they believe that they can win,’’ said Claremont coach Kim Graves. “This will be a very competitive tournament as there are several tough teams.’’

The other teams at Mount Douglas are the host Rams, Spectrum, Oak Bay, Courtenay G.P. Vanier, Nanaimo Dover Bay and Stelly’s. The final is 7 p.m. Saturday and the top two teams advance to the provincials, March 7-10 at Capilano University in North Vancouver.

The eight-team double-A showdown features three teams — Brentwood College, SMUS and Lambrick Park — ranked in the top 10.

“This is a great time of the year for basketball fans,’’ said SMUS coach Reagan Daly. “Our team seems to be peaking at the right time and they like playing in front of their friends and family.’’

“Brentwood College and SMUS are the favourites and we believe that our team can be in the top three,’’ said Lambrick Park coach Ed Somers.

The final is set for

7:15 p.m. Saturday and the top three go to the provincials, March 7-10 in Kamloops.
