One of the hottest potential properties leading up to the NHL trade deadline is off the market.

Tuomo Ruutu agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Carolina Hurricanes worth $19 million US on Wednesday. The cap hit is $4.75 million per season.

The deal includes a no-movement clause the first three years, general manager Jim Rutherford told the Raleigh News and Observer.

“He’s an important player to our team and he’s the type of player who, long-term, would take a long time to replace,” Rutherford said to the newspaper. “We’re thankful Tuomo is staying with us. He’s an important building block for us in moving forward.”

Ruutu was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Reportedly the Hurricanes had set Wednesday as a deadline to get a new deal done.

Ruutu is in the final year of a three-year contract worth $11.4 million.

The 29-year-old is second on the Canes with 17 goals — he also has 13 assists. He is expected to be out the next two weeks after suffering an upper-body injury against Montreal on Feb. 13.
