Having won just once in their last 16 games, there hasn’t been much one can rely on when it comes to the Victoria Grizzlies.
The B.C. Hockey League club’s power play had at least provided some form of a spark the last few outings, but even that positive trend disappeared Sunday.
Allowing two short-handed goals in the first period, Victoria struggled to yet another dreary road loss, this time a 6-0 drubbing to the Powell River Kings at Hap Parker Arena.
The Grizzlies’ special teams unit — successful on 4-of-5 power plays the previous three games — finished 0-for-3 on Sunday afternoon. Allowing the two shorties at 1:19 and 16:40 of the opening period took away any chance of momentum.
Down 2-0 after one, Victoria managed to hang in against the three-time defending Coastal Conference-champion Kings, until the hosts opened the game up with two goals in a 23-second span in the last minute of the second period.
Powell River added two more in the third to call it a day.
Matt Scarth recorded his fourth and fifth goals against Victoria in two games, following up on his Saturday hat-trick in a 13-1 laugher. Teagan Waugh, Cohen Adair, Craig Dalrymple and J.P. Villeneuve also scored for the winners. Former Grizzly Evan Richardson added three assists.
Jonah Imoo stopped all 13 shots he faced in the Kings’ net, including just one in the third as the short-handed Grizzlies simply ran out of steam. Nicholas Taylor faced 44 in goal for Victoria.
Mark McLellan, who scored the only Grizzlies goal of the weekend, did not dress Sunday due to injury.
