Oak Bay, Mount Doug on collision course at South Islands

If everything goes according to the seedings, there will be another Oak Bay-Mount Douglas battle at the South Vancouver Island senior boys’ triple-A basketball championship.

The seven-team event starts tonight at 7:30 at Spectrum with a play-in game as host Spectrum meets Reynolds. Then the remainder of the tournament shifts to Oak Bay with quarter-final action on Thursday with Belmont against Stelly’s (8 p.m.) and Claremont takes on the winner of the Spectrum-Reynolds game at 6 p.m.

Waiting in the wings are the South Island’s No. 1-seeded Oak Bay Bays and No. 2 Mount Douglas Rams.

“We have had some great games with Oak Bay this year,’’ said Mount Douglas coach Skip Cronck. “We beat Oak Bay at its tournament and then we needed double overtime to win a league game. Oak Bay then came to our gym and beat us by three points.

“Our games have been great for the fans and I just hope that we have another good turnout this weekend.’’

Oak Bay’s first game is Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of Belmont and Stelly’s. Mount Douglas takes the floor at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the other quarter-final winner.

“We have a strong offensive team with some good outside shooters,’’ said Cronck. “Our team is led by Conor Morgan, Elliot Rowe and Curtis Wilson. Since Christmas, with the help of Ken Shields, we have been working hard on our defence and it’s getting better.

“On paper, it should be us and Oak Bay in the final but this is high school sports and anything can happen. Earlier this year, we were up by 20 against Claremont at the half and lost by eight. Claremont has also beaten Oak Bay.’’

Oak Bay, coached by Chris Franklin, is ranked tied for eighth in B.C. while Mount Douglas is No. 11.

“Oak Bay has a very good point shooter in Kaz [Kobyashi],’’ said Cronck. “He also controls the floor very well. When they need someone to score points, their go-to guy is Evan Woodson. In the double overtime game, Woodson and Morgan put on an unbelievable show. They were scoring from all over the floor as everything they shot seemed to fall in. Oak Bay likes to put a lot of pressure on Morgan and he has to learn how to handle it and keep his focus.’’

On Saturday, the placing game for third and fourth is at 5 p.m., followed by the championship final at 7 p.m.

The top four teams advance to the 62nd annual Island championship, March 1-3 at Cowichan Secondary in Duncan. There will be no challenge game this year as both the North and the South conferences have seven teams.

From the Islands, three teams will then make their way to the B.C. triple-A championship, March 13-17 at the Langley Events Centre.
