It's not Friday and there won't be lights, but that doesn't mean there won't be some top-notch high school football today.

The junior varsity provincial semifinal goes this afternoon at 3:30 when the Mount Doug Rams square off against Nanaimo's John Barsby at Bear Mountain Stadium in Langford. The winner advances to next weekend's provincial championship game.

The Rams are coming off a 45-0 shutout of Carson Graham in the quarters.

More than 400 young soccer players from around the Island will be buzzing around the fields at Lochside Park tonight as the annual Danone Nations Cup provincial tryouts get underway.

The players -- U-12 and U-11 boys and girls -- will take part in scrimmages and Team Canada coaches will select a handful of players to advance to the final provincial camp this spring in Burnaby. From the final provincial camp, players are chosen to be members of Team Canada West, which will square off against Team Canada East this summer with the winner representing Canada at the 11th Danone Nations Cup next fall.

The Danone Nations Cup is modelled after the World Cup. Until last year, the tournament took place in Lyon, France. Last year the event was scheduled for Sao Paulo, Brazil, but was cancelled due to the H1N1 breakout in that country. A location for the 2010 event has yet to be selected.
