Island swimmers can almost hear Big Ben chiming.
The Canadian Olympic trials, March 27-April 1 in Montreal for the 2012 London Summer Games, are looming. Several Island competitors are proving this weekend they are ready to answer the call, where their Olympic dreams will be realized or dashed.
Ryan Cochrane, Alexa Komarnycky, Alec Page and Blake Worsley, all of Victoria Swim Academy, won gold medals Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Grand Prix meet in Columbia, Missouri.
“It’s a really important result in my preparation for the trials,’’ said men’s 400-metre individual medley winner Page, in a release.
Cochrane, bronze-medallist in the 1,500 metres at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, hopes to medal in both the 1,500 and 400 freestyle at London. The lanky 23-year-old Claremont Secondary grad and current UVic student continued that quest by winning the 400 freestyle Saturday in 3:53.47. But the biggest Island story in that race was 18-year-old Keegan Zanatta’s breakthrough silver medal behind Victoria clubmate Cochrane in 3:53.60. Page, who is also 18, was sixth in 3:59.59.
Worsley upset clubmate Cochrane to win the 200-metre freestyle final. Cochrane was third and Stefan Hirniak, another Victorian, fourth.
“It’s where I want to be at this point in the season,’’ said Worsley, who competed in the NCAA for the University of Denver, before making Saanich Commonwealth Place his swimming home.
Hirniak, born and raised in New Jersey of Canadian parents, won bronze in the men’s 200-metre butterfly with Page seventh.
Komarnycky won the women’s 400-metre IM in 4:41.66 with fellow-Victorian Stephanie Horner third in 4:44.91.
“I wanted to go 4:40, but it was still a very encouraging swim,’’ said Komarnycky, in a release.
Julia Wilkinson took silver in the women’s 200-metre freestyle while fellow Victorian MacKenzie Downing was fourth in both the 100- and 200-metre butterfly events.
Wilkinson and Komarnycky were part of the winning Canadian team in the women’s 4x100 freestyle relay with Worsley, Page and Hirniak second in the men’s 4x100.
The Spurs bent, but didn't break.
