Hitmen roll on to provincial peewee football final

It's two down, one to go for the Victoria Hitmen peewee football team.

The group of 10- and

11-year-olds advanced to the provincial championship last week by shocking the Lower Mainland champion Cloverdale Lynx 35-6 at Dennison Park in South Delta. That victory came on the heels of a

lopsided win over the Nanaimo Bombers the week before in the Island championship.

Now, the Hitmen, coached by Darryl Pollock, look to cap off an undefeated season -- where they've scored 349 points and allowed just 18 in 10 games -- with a victory in the provincial final this weekend against Prince George in Kamloops.

The Victoria Bowmen Archery Club is in need of a new home.

The club, which has been in existence since 1949 and produced numerous Canadian champions, has been booted out of its longtime home off Wilfert Road in Colwood and is now looking for a new location to call home. The club does make use of a school gym during the winter but requires an outdoor facility to properly train its members and host championship tournaments. They are looking to lease or purchase a flat, open piece of land (about 100 metres by 20 metres) for target archery and a further two acres of forested area for field archery purposes.

If anyone can be of assistance, call Larry Gagnon at 250-382-1266.

Crystal Poland of Crofton capped off her first season of NCAA field hockey in style last weekend when she was named the Colonial Athletic Association rookie of the year.

The Northeaster University rookie led all freshmen in the conference in points (30), goals (12) and assists (6). In the process, Poland became the highest-scoring freshman in Northeastern history. In addition to her rookie-of-the-year honours, Poland, a graduate of Cowichan Secondary, was named to the CAA all-rookie team.

Poland is also a carded member of Canada's national women's field hockey team.

The South Island Thunderbirds will be looking to regroup at home this weekend after a dispappointing trip to the Okanagan last weekend.

The T-Birds dropped both games of their B.C. Major Midget Hockey League double-header against the second-place Okanagan Rockets, dropping their record to 4-11-1. They try to rebound this weekend when they host the Thompson Blazers Saturday (5:20 p.m. at the Ian Stewart Complex) and Sunday (9:30 a.m. at Panorama Recreation Centre).

Lou-Poy, a forward with the Island Pacific Phantoms, was named the SCFAHL player of the week after scoring twice and adding a pair of assists to help the Phantoms beat the Mid-Island Blackhawks 5-3 in Parksville. Lou-Poy now has three goals and three assists in four games this season.

They may not be in the limelight but Island hockey officials Steve Bratt and Trent Knorr continue to climb the officiating ladder in this country.

Bratt, of Port Alberni, and Knorr, of Victoria, were recently chosen to take part in the prestigious Western Officiating Program of Excellence in Kamloops. They were among just six B.C. officials in attendance as they took part in seminars and were evaluated on and off the ice by Hockey Canada, Western Hockey League and National Hockey League officiating supervisors.
