Victoria Highlanders FC will launch its 2010 campaign by competing in the inaugural Coast Capital Cup series against Mainland rivals Abbotsford and Vancouver. The new Cup competition features the three Canadian clubs -- Highlanders, Abbotsford Mariners and the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency -- who all compete in the Northwest Division of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League.
The first leg for Victoria is May 1 at Bear Mountain Stadium in Langford against Abbotsford, coached by former Highlanders head coach Colin Miller. The Cup is structured so each team will play a single match against the other two with the aggregate of goals scored deciding the Cup winner.
The Highlanders open their USL PDL regular season at Bear Mountain Stadium May 8 against the Whitecaps Residency. The Highlanders' 2010 schedule, which runs May 8 to July 25, will include home and away games against Abbotsford, Vancouver, Kitsap Pumas, Washington Crossfire, Yakima Reds, Spokane Spiders, Tacoma Tide and the Portland Timbers U-23s. In addition, Highlanders FC and Victoria United of the PCSL will play the second annual Victoria Derby Charity Shield match June 30.
The newly announced Highlanders women's FC team will compete this summer in the Premier Women's Division of the Pacific Coast League and will kick off May 9 at home against the Okanagan Whitecaps.
