The vehicle fire, in the Prospect Lake Road-Petworth Drive area, seems suspicious but so far the cause is unknown.

A car fire in a quiet area near Prospect Lake Road in Saanich early this morning is being investigated as an arson, police say.

Two people were driving on Prospect Lake Road near Petworth Drive around 2:30 a.m. when they spotted an early 2000 full-sized SUV engulfed in flames, said Saanich police spokesman Sgt. Steve Eassie.

They called 911 and were told to stay away from the vehicle in case of an explosion.

“At this point the fire does appear to be suspicious although we’re not sure what caused the fire,” Eassie said.

Saanich fire investigators and police are looking into what might have happened. Eassie said while there are homes in the area, the car was not parked directly outside a home, but closer to the intersection of the two streets.

Investigators have identified the registered owner of the vehicle, which had B.C. licence plates. Police have not yet made contact with the owner.

Eassie said it’s too early to speculate if someone might have deliberately set the fire.

Saanich police are asking anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area before the fire to contact them at 250-475-4321.
