Readers’ photos: Celebrating 86 years of Oak Bay High

Oak Bay’s new high school will open this year, and as the community says goodbye to the old building, we asked you to send us photos of your memories of the school. Today, we’re sharing some of the photos we received.

Oak Bay’s new high school will open this year, and as the community says goodbye to the old building, we asked you to send us photos of your memories of the school.

Today, we’re sharing some of the photos we received. In an upcoming issue of Islander, we will print historical photos of the old Belmont High School.

Thousands of students passed through the halls of the old Oak Bay building, which opened on Cranmore Road in 1929 after it moved from the site where the Oak Bay municipal hall now stands. Later, more buildings were added.

As the $52.5-million new building nears completion, the old one has been taken apart with an effort to salvage as much as possible, including the unique California-made tiles on parts of the exterior.

Oak Bay is not the only high school being replaced. Belmont is also falling to the wreckers, and we are looking for photos of its history, as well. We will print some of them in an upcoming issue of Islander.

If you have photos of Oak Bay High School or Belmont High School you would like to share, email them to features@ timescolonist.com with Oak Bay High or Belmont High in the subject line.
