Nurturing love of nature at an early age

Re: “Victoria considers nature kindergarten,” Oct. 10.

I applaud the Sooke and Greater Victoria school districts for investing in outdoor kindergarten classes. Instilling a love of nature, confidence in exploring the outdoors and respect for conserving our wild spaces at an early age just makes sense.

We are the lost generation, tethered to technology without truly understanding what we lose if we kill the environment. Our generation dropped the ball, but we now have the opportunity to pick it back up again. My hope is that Canada will one day step out on the world stage, in support of Mother Nature.

Small steps such as introducing nature-based kindergarten classes seem like a step in the right direction. This is about right to life and celebration of our indigenous cultures.

To hear that parents camped out overnight to register their children into Sooke’s inaugural pilot project is heartwarming. Our children need all the support we can give them to become stewards of nature and the environment and I am proud of the leadership being shown by visionaries within our school system.
