A friend of mine was a waiter at a restaurant on Robson Street in the 1990s. One night, Robin Williams came in with some friends after a movie shoot. Coincidentally, it was Pierre Trudeau’s birthday; he and his small entourage were there as well.

Trudeau saw Williams across the room and asked my waiter friend to tell him: “A former prime minister of Canada is celebrating his birthday and would very much like to meet Mr. Williams.”

So my friend gave the message to Williams, who came right over to Trudeau’s table and, impersonating Marilyn Monroe singing to John F. Kennedy, sang: “Happy birthday, Prime Minister.”

What a moment. What a sad loss.
