We will need other Canadians’ help

The current debates on the future of the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the speculation-tax proposal raise some concerns about the future cohesion of this country.

The current debates on the future of the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the speculation-tax proposal raise some concerns about the future cohesion of this country.

On pipelines, we are told the project must be stopped because the risk is not if, but when there is a spill or a leak. The risk tolerance for many is zero.

Let us apply the same logic to the seismic situation we face on the Island and in the Lower Mainland. It seems agreed by all that the risk is not if, but when the Big One hits.

If opponents of Kinder Morgan succeed with the logic of their position, now that the B.C. government has equated other Canadians who own vacation homes here with money launderers from away, to whom shall we turn for help when, not if, the Big One hits?

It will be those Canadians whose interests today are rejected and derided by so many in this province who will have to put coastal British Columbia back on its feet.

This is a good time to think and act like the Canadians we are proud to be.
