Re: “Right-to-die decision flawed: lawyer,” March 19.
I have been diagnosed with a progressive disease, so I read this article from a unique perspective. I am stunned by the argument of the “vast majority” choosing “protecting life” as paramount.
We have the opportunity to learn from those countries that for many years have had right-to-die legislation. They have found that this law is not a risk to vulnerable groups, but are only for those with progressive or terminal illness. What we do need to do is pay attention to the individuals who are committing suicide because they are afraid when their progressive or terminal illness moves into the final stages, they will be unable to end their lives and will be trapped suffering until the inevitable.
Bring hope to those with progressive and terminal illness — support choice.
