Congratulations to Premier John Horgan.
I am not an expert in either energy or the environment; I only know things from the public record.
Horgan took his time, and made a decision that was not politically expedient for him. This alone should give us pause, rather than vitriol, to ask why.
B.C. has a chance to withdraw from carbon-based electricity, now and even more in the future by having Site C completed. We currently buy electricity from coal-fired plants in Alberta.
The increasing hope for a shift to electric cars, buses and trucks will need ever more replacement of hydrocarbon fuel with electricity that has to be developed somehow.
Consider that most vehicle charging is done at night, and only power sources that can work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year will work technically.
Solar and wind sources will make up a small component of our future needs. Neither of these is free and without human and environmental impact, either.
The biggest question in B.C. should be: “Why is the Green Party against the most environmentally friendly solution?”
The answer is the difference in motive. The Green Party is politically motivated in the short term, while Horgan has done what is right for us in the long term, even at his political cost.
This kind of leadership is in short supply around the world right now.
