In 2009, Carole James and the NDP ran a campaign on killing the carbon tax, something that seemingly undermined their environmental values.
Fast forward to this election, in which John Horgan and the NDP are running a campaign that appears to include strong protection for our environment. Many praise them for their opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline. But what people don’t see is their secret support for fracking and liquefied natural gas, and their love affair with these corporations.
In November 2016, Horgan joined Clark in supporting the Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish. Moving forward with any LNG project is a terrible idea for our economy, not to mention the environment. So why would the NDP support this? Could it be that they received more than $7,000 from Woodfibre LNG in 2015?
When a political party accepts money from the same organizations it supports politically, it raises serious questions about who is really calling the shots.
Through B.C.’s recent elections, the NDP has become power-hungry and even contradicted its own values to try to gain government. This time around, it has held this frame.
If you’re someone who cares about our democracy and environment, the B.C. NDP is not your party. And with the Greens’ strict stance on LNG, fracking and corporate donations, they are not the party to join the NDP.
After decades of the same failure in B.C. politics, it might just be time to seek out a true alternative.
