I share the concerns of Cities for Everyone. Specific to Cook Street Village and Fairfield, I fully agree we need more density, affordability and walkability. However, many developers are offering very expensive condos in buildings that tower well above their traditional four-storey neighbours, offer limited or no setbacks, and feature Stalinist-inspired architecture.
I cheer the projects that provide a new single-family home that fits the streetscape and offers a secondary suite, a duplex or a garden suite, and row housing/townhouse developments. I also welcome multi-unit projects that acknowledge their neighbours by providing suitable setbacks, upper-floor terracing and quality designs. And finally, we need city council to press developers hard for more rentals.
Without some creative interventions, Fairfield will soon become a neighbourhood of grumpy old white guys, like me. How sad is that?
