Victoria could take a page from Sidney’s book

Sidney council is selling a municipally owned parking lot in a new Third Street development project and has stipulated that future development proposals require replacing the lost parking, which will be town controlled.

The obvious question is: What does Sidney council understand about maintaining a vibrant downtown core that the current Victoria council can’t seem to grasp? Sidney residents should be grateful that their town is not controlled by Victoria’s current mayor and her merry band of social engineers. Were they in charge of this development, they would have replaced the lost parking with two bike racks, a single electric-car share and a decorated painted crosswalk for all the pedestrians who have to walk miles to get to their cars.

Then, because of their highly principled stand against big oil, the developers would be forced to revert to cast-iron and copper plumbing with lead solder, and would not be allowed to use any petroleum-based materials. After all, the producers of all these products are responsible for everything that is bad in the world, right?

I guess Victoria’s mayor and her trade council must have rowed to China last week. Surely they wouldn’t want to be responsible for spewing thousands of litres of “climate changing” aviation kerosene into the fragile upper atmosphere.
