I was a 20-something member of the Victoria Symphony when Van Cliburn came to Victoria 40 years ago to play a concerto.
A shy, modest man, even as a major player, he seemed surprised and even overwhelmed at the accolades he received. We musicians were impressed with the time he spent talking to us — a sign of a real star and a true gentleman.
