Using parks not the answer to homelessness

Victoria city council is taking the wrong approach by using city parks to house the homeless, including creation of a “community of micro-houses.”

Our parks should be sacrosanct. A side-effect of this proposal would be the unlikelihood of other core municipalities ever agreeing to amalgamation. The amalgamated city council could decide to include parks such as Mount Douglas or Willows Beach as sites for these micro-houses or tent cities.

The problem of homeless people is real, but it should be remembered that two-thirds of the homeless have addiction or mental health problems. What is needed is structured, supported housing, coupled with some tough love when required, not a Band-Aid under which infection can fester.
