Trophy hunting of grizzlies is barbaric

Re: “NDP would ban grizzly trophy hunting: Horgan,” Nov. 25.

The announcement that the B.C. NDP is pledging to end the trophy hunting of grizzly bears is the best news I have heard in a long time. Congratulations to John Horgan and his NDP members for having the courage to take a stand and condemn the trophy hunting of these bears.

The B.C. Liberals claim that the grizzly bear population can tolerate the 250 to 350 bears killed each year by trophy hunters. However, they are not taking into consideration the enormous pressure the loss of habitat puts on the bears’ declining numbers, and nor are they reckoning on how many bears will be killed by the increasing number of vehicles pushing into the forests.

Whether or not B.C.’s grizzly bear population can remain healthy in spite of the numbers being slaughtered by trophy hunters and trophy hunting is wrong. And Horgan and the NDP are right to condemn the barbaric killing of magnificent grizzlies and are right to promise to stop the trophy hunting.

The Liberal party should re-examine its stand on this issue. More than 90 per cent of B.C. residents are opposed to the trophy hunting of grizzly bears.

The NDP will get my vote in the provincial election in May. That is my pledge to the grizzly bears.
