Tourists shouldn’t fear Victoria

Some friendly advice for the letter-writer from Saskatchewan.

Bypass the pyramids in Egypt and visit the magnificent and mysterious Roman ruins in Baalbek, Lebanon. They are a hundred times more spectacular. Some of the stones used to build the temples weigh more than 1,000 tons.

Don’t let the fear of terrorists stop you. Don’t trade liberty, one of life’s most precious gifts, for security. You will end up with neither.

As for visiting Victoria, fear not. It has a much lower crime rate than Kelowna and your next-door neighbour Saskatoon. When visiting the capital, make it a point to visit the infamous tent city and see firsthand the deplorable living conditions of those who have fallen on hard times.

Don’t condemn the whole lot for the few and buy into the prevailing right-of-centre point of view: “That it serves them right.”
