Time for feds to act on UN declaration

It’s time for the federal Liberal government to start walking its talk when it comes to Indigenous rights. It’s been 10 years since the UN adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

It’s time for the federal Liberal government to start walking its talk when it comes to Indigenous rights.

It’s been 10 years since the UN adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. There has been a lot of fine talk from this government about reconciliation and forging a new relationship with Canada’s First Nations, but we are still waiting for the government to implement the UN declaration, including the right of First Nations to withhold or grant their free, prior and informed consent for development projects on their lands and in their waters.

Bill C-262 is coming up for a vote soon, but all the indications are the Liberals will vote against this legislation. Enough is enough. It’s time for this government to turn its fine talk into action. Canadians will remember how it deals or fails to deal with this issue when 2019 rolls around.
