Speed cameras might generate revenue for cash-strapped municipalities, but the claim that they make roads safer was called into question by a British study in 2015 by Wunelli, a company that compiles traffic data for insurance companies.
According to the study, not only are roads with speed cameras less safe — because drivers brake hard when they see them, which leads to more accidents — Wunelli concluded that “the most dangerous place to be on a British road is near a speed camera.”
